Alberta's Population Is Booming: Are You Ready to Immigrate to Alberta, Canada?

Ackah Law is headquartered in Calgary, Alberta. We love living in Calgary - and it seems the secret is out! New data from Statistics Canada’s midyear update on population and demographics show that in the 12 months ending on July 1, Alberta's population increased by 4%, the fastest pace in the country. Many foreigners want to immigrate to Alberta, Canada - and here are some of the reasons why.

Why Immigrants Choose Alberta, Canada

Immigrants choose Alberta, Canada for a variety of reasons, including its strong economy, affordable housing and diverse job market.

Strong economy

Alberta has a nation-leading economic strength, with a GDP that is expected to expand by 2.3% in 2023, far stronger than the national average. The province has also added 44,000 net new jobs since April, generating nearly 60% of the country's job growth all by itself.

Affordable housing

Alberta has some of the most affordable housing in Canada, with the average price of a house at $440,000, compared with $956,000 in neighboring British Columbia and $832,000 in Ontario. The average rent for a one-bedroom apartment in Edmonton is also under $1,300 a month, compared with more than $2,600 in Toronto and nearly $3,000 in Vancouver.

Diverse job market

Alberta's economy is not just reliant on oil and gas. In recent years, the province has diversified its economy into other sectors such as clean energy, ag tech, and transport and logistics. This has created a wide range of job opportunities for immigrants.

Immigration To Alberta, Canada

Alberta continues to be the top choice for immigrants who move to Canada. In the past ten years, 436,766 people moved to Alberta from abroad - about 36,000 people per year, says ATB Financial's Economics & Research Team. Their study shows 88% of people who moved to Alberta from another country were immigrants, rather than people returning to Alberta after living abroad.

Alberta Is Multicultural and Welcoming

In addition to these economic factors, Alberta is also a multicultural province with a welcoming community. Immigrants are drawn to Alberta's high quality of life, which includes a strong education system, universal healthcare and a variety of outdoor recreational activities.

Alberta is a diverse province and immigrants are a critical part of Alberta's growth. Calgary was named to the top 10 most livable cities in the world in the Global Liveability Index - and the #1 most livable city in North America! Calgarians are warm and welcoming to newcomers, and with 240 different ethnic origins, Calgary is ranked third in the proportion of visible minorities in Canada.

Overall, Alberta is a desirable destination for immigrants because it offers a strong economy, affordable housing, a diverse job market and a welcoming community.
