Canada Fast Track to Permanent Residency for Foreign Healthcare Workers

Canada announced a new fast track to permanent residency for foreign healthcare workers if they are already in Canada and they possess the skills and experience Canada needs to fight the pandemic and accelerate the economic recovery.

Beginning May 6, 2021, Canada's IRCC (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada) will begin accepting permanent residence applications:

  • 20,000 apps for temporary workers in healthcare
  • Healthcare Worker Permanent Residency Eligibility

In making the announcement, IRCC said the temporary new fast track program ensures that healthcare workers don’t miss out on opportunities due to the pandemic and the largest draw in the history of the Express Entry system.

    • To be eligible, health care workers must have at least 1 yr of CAD work experience in a healthcare profession.
    • 40 healthcare-related occupations are eligible for the new PR pathway including non-veterinarian National Occupational Classification (NOC) category 3 health occupations such as home support workers, housekeepers and related occupations.
    • The new healthcare worker permanent residency program will remain open until November 5, 2021, or until they have reached their limit.
"The pandemic has highlighted the contribution of foreign nationals in Canada, across all sectors and skill levels. During the global COVID-19 pandemic, there is an increased need to ensure that Canada has the necessary workforce to support the physical health and wellbeing of individuals, as well as the economic recovery. The public policy targets foreign nationals with at least one year of work experience in Canada in an essential occupation, in recognition of their economic contribution and in acknowledgement of the ongoing need that Canada has for these professionals.”

    – The Honourable Marco E. L. Mendicino, P.C., M.P.,
Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship

The new permanent residence programs will help Canada to reach its 2021 Immigration Levels Plan and welcome 401,000 new permanent residents.

Forbes Bros. Ltd. chose Ackah law as our immigration specialist for several reasons:

    1. Competence: As immigration, permanent residency and the temporary Foreign worker program are necessary to our business we are not in a position to use a less than fully qualified service provider on these files.

    2. Responsiveness: When you are dealing with the lives of people, there is nothing more important to that individual at that moment than his or her immigration issues, responsiveness to this, and an appreciation of the employee’s position is key.

    3. Attitude: The thing I like best about Ackah law is the attitude and can-do spirit of the staff. Evelyn and her team show us what a small group of dedicated individuals can do. IT is the first time in a long time that I didn’t feel like a billable hour in a lawyers office.
