Expedited Work Permits for UK and Northern Ireland Citizens: CUKTCA

The Canada-United Kingdom Trade Continuity Agreement (Canada-UK TCA, or CUKTCA) went into effect on April 1, 2021, and provides expedited work permits for United Kingdom and Northern Ireland nationals and businesses. Previously, U.K. citizens were covered under CETA provisions, which CUKTCA is modelled after.

The CUKTCA treaty was needed after Brexit, because when the U.K. left the European Union on January 1, 2021, citizens of the United Kingdom (U.K.) who want to work in Canada can no longer be processed under the CETA. CUKTCA is a reciprocal treaty, and Canadian workers have similar benefits if they want to live and work in the U.K.

Individual Work Permit Benefits

U.K. nationals already living and working in Canada under CETA who want to extend their work permit should fill out a new CUKTCKA application.

Applicants can be processed at the port of entry, or qualified applicants can apply from within Canada or at Canadian missions abroad.

Business and Trade Benefits

The CUKTCA treaty provides preferential, mutual trade and business benefits to Canada and the U.K.
