US Student Visa In-Person Interviews Waived Through 2022

The U.S. State Department is waiving student visa in-person interviews and other temporary non-immigrant visa application interviews through 2022 due to the backlog of applications created by the pandemic. Temporary, nonimmigration student visa applicants for

  • Student F and M Visas
  • Student Exchange Visitors Academic J Visas
and other temporary visas applying from abroad won’t be required to do an in-person interview at a U.S. consulate, which is typically the last step of the application process. The December 23 waiver announcement said:

The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in profound reductions in the Department’s visa processing capacity... As global travel rebounds, we are taking these temporary steps to further our commitment to safely and efficiently reduce visa wait times while maintaining national security as our priority.

What Is An F-1 Visa?
If you want to attend school in the United States including a high school, private elementary school, university or college, conservatory, seminary, or "another academic institution, including a language training program" you will need an F-1 visa. An F-1 visa allows an international student to temporarily live in the United States for a defined period of time while studying at an educational institution.

What Is An M Visa?
An M visa is for international students in nonacademic or vocational studies. M-1 visa holders for technical and vocational programs are not permitted to work during their studies and prove they have sufficient funds to pay all their tuition and living costs for the entire period of their intended stay.

What Is A J Visa?
A J visa is for international students in a work-study visitor exchange program. Research scholars, professors and exchange visitors participating in programs that promote and other J visa applicants must be sponsored either by a university, private sector or government program.
